What is a Hosted PBX?

A hosted PBX is a PBX system that is housed, maintained and delivered by a third party service provider. Unlike an on-premise PBX there is no physical PBX hardware to store or maintain. The only physical hardware to house and maintain are your desktop phones.

Like a physical on-premise PBX a hosted PBX is responsible for your call control functionality, management of your telephones and connection to your voice service.

Hosted PBX can also be called Centrex services, Centrix PBX or IP Centrix.

Are there different types of hosted PBX systems?

There are two different type of hosted PBX. The two different types of hosted PBX systems are:

  1. Virtual PBX - A virtual PBX is a hosted PBX that allows you to set-up and manage your existing telephone, VoIP and or cellular lines under one central system.
  2. Hosted VoIP PBX - A hosted VoIP PBX is a hosted PBX that leverages your Internet connection and VoIP service to deliver both your PBX functionality and your voice service.
